I thought it would be a good idea to start putting some acoustic demos up on YouTube, so here’s the first one. This is a cover of “I’m The Ocean” by Neil Young, which hails from the 1995 album Mirror Ball that he did with Pearl Jam. This is (obviously) a bit of a departure from the officially released version of the song. The original has about double the lyrics, and is played much faster and electric. I have a general philosophy on covers that there’s no real point in doing them if you’re not trying to bring something else to the table than what was already released by the original artist. So I tried to take out the more personal lyrics at the beginning and give the acoustic treatment a bit of rhythmic drive. Any thoughts are welcome, be they positive or negative.
